Snapshot: Blue Santa Parade and TFLP

Greetings, All! I want to share a great event in which the San Antonio Toyota Family Literacy Program (TFLP) was involved.

The Blue Santa Parade and Community Event is held annually by the San Antonio police and about 35 community organizations, TFLP included. Blue Santa arrived by helicopter at the Miller's Pond Community Center to the delight of children and families. [flickr]photo:3112628547[/flickr]

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank you for your contributions to family literacy. Whether you are an ESL instructor, a program coordinator, a philanthropist, or a parent, you help make the world a more literate place. And in honor of Thanksgiving, here's a special video from the newest Toyota Family Literacy Program in Springdale, Arkansas.

From Sharon: Congratulations, Springdale!

Springdale faced very stiff competition! NCFL received proposals from 191 cities across the country for the TFLP award; Springdale was one of only five selected. What makes this award so special is that the whole community of Springdale is involved with the implementation of the program.

Last week I represented the United States at the Frankfurt Book Fair Literacy Campaign Conference (LITCAM) in Frankfurt, Germany. Though the name of the conference is quite a mouthful, I had such a wonderful time!

Washington Post: Letter to the Editor

The story "Companies Take Lead in Assimilation Efforts; Programs Aid Immigrant Workers" ran in the Washington Post on August 9. NCFL knows the importance of educating immigrant families-- the Toyota Family Literacy Program (TFLP) was created specifically for this population and has been extremely successful by improving parents' English skills and helping them encourage their children's success in school. Guest post!

Jordan just completed a ten-week internship at NCFL. She came to NCFL from Yale University, but she's from Lexington (and the first one in her family to go to college!). We were so glad to have her and wish her the best in her classes this fall! When I was perusing the options I had available to me for this summer, I only had one criterion-close to home. I'm a Kentucky girl, born and raised in the heart of the bluegrass in Lexington, Kentucky. However, like most Yale students I was expected to do something great, something note-worthy with my summer.
