CNN to feature NCFL corporate partner

One of our corporate partners, Better World Books, will be featured this weekend on CNN and CNN Headline News. I hope you have the opportunity to check it out.

It is a well-deserved recognition for a dynamic social enterprise that is the leader in converting donated books into funding to support literacy. Each consumer who sees the story will also learn about the important cause of family literacy since BWB has been a partner of NCFL’s since 2005.

BWB nominated for BusinessWeek Social Enterprise Award

Since 2005, Better World Books has been a committed partner in our mission to build a more literate nation on so many levels; they have dedicated their funding, time, talent and energy to family literacy.

The goal of this new project, made possible by MetLife Foundation, is to help provide a smooth transition for students from literacy programs to higher education.

Better World Books Receives National Honor

Literacy Voices Roundup is on hiatus this week in honor of BWB's recent award.  NCFL's Emily Kirkpatrick presented the award on Wednesday night in Washington, DC.

A storybook achievement

[flickr]photo:2756966062[/flickr]We are so often bombarded with the news of low test scores, struggling readers and children falling behind in the classroom. I was delighted to read this refreshing article about the tremendous success with literacy and reading in Clay County, Kentucky, the fourth-poorest county in the nation. The article inspires us all to take action and remember what is truly possible when a community rallies strategically towards a literacy goal.

Questions from Gary

[flickr]photo:2404759343[/flickr]  Gary Knell is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sesame Workshop.  Gary and his furry pal Grover recently spoke at out conference.  Gary stressed the importance of technology...and not just for the students.  Family literacy teachers must continue to learn about technology to stay in tune with the younger generation of "technology natives." Sesame Workshop will be focusing on the 6-9 year olds demographic when they reintroduce "The Electric Company" this January.
